It’s very important to remember, any position or posture you put your body in for long periods of time and repeat for several days, months, and years will have a profound impact on the way your body looks, feels, and functions. With long-term exposure, you can actually change the shape of your body. So be mindful of your posture and get started making healthy changes today!

Avoid prolonged exposure to the following postures:

  • holding cell phone with your shoulder
  • bending your neck down to look at cell phone, tablets, or while reading books
  • slouching in a chair, couch, recliner, or on a bench
  • forward neck extension while working on a computer or driving
  • bending forward at the back while working or playing (doing dishes, changing diapers, etc.)
  • lying on your stomach (watching TV, reading, or while sleeping)

Here are some real life examples of everyday postures which can become problematic with repeated exposure. Again, be mindful of your body posture and try to correct your posture when appropriate!

What is wrong with this posture? While working or playing on a computer (in a seated or standing position) try to avoid slouching forward and forward neck positioning.

What is wrong with this posture? While talking on your phone, try to limit the amount of time you spend holding the phone with your shoulder. Alternatives: hold the phone with your hand and maintain a straight neck position, use your speaker phone, use a Bluetooth device (especially while driving), or postpone the phone call until your hands are free.

What is wrong with this posture? This is a very common position in today's society! Walking or driving and texting... writing e-mails... searching the web... or other applications. Not only will this become problematic for your neck and spine, this is unsafe! Stop walking and driving and hold your phone up to eye-level so you can maintain a straight neck.

What a great picture! Unfortunately, parents of new-born babies often complain of back and neck pain. Be mindful of your posture and how it may be affecting your health. Stretch and strengthen your neck and back muscles to avoid complications- pay special attention to exercises later in this challenge.

Again, changing diapers and bending over to assist in parenting-related activities can become physically challenging for care-givers. Keep your neck and back fit and healthy to manage these demands!

Good work. You've completed the content for this section, now let's challenge your knowledge by taking a very short quiz!
